Intensive care staff and support

Intensive care staff and support

If your child requires intensive care treatment, several doctors may be involved. A neonatologist looks after babies and a paediatric intensivist looks after children.

Specialists

Every few weeks and on some weekends, another neonatologist or intensivist will take over the day-to-day responsibility for your child's care. They will be fully informed about your child's condition. Other specialists, such as surgeons and cardiologists (heart doctors) may also be involved in the care of your baby or child if problems arise.

Nurses

A nurse is responsible for your child's immediate care.  Nurses are rostered on shifts and there will be a shift handover two to three times daily. You may also be able to participate in some of your child's care if you want to, particularly as his or her condition improves.

Feel free to ask the staff any questions when you visit or call. You may arrange an appointment through the ward staff to meet your child's specialist.

Social worker

The hospital social worker is always available to meet parents. They provide support during distressing times and may be able to help with coping strategies or financial assistance.

You can ask to see the social worker if you have any difficulties you would like to discuss, or if you need more information on any issue.

Many parents cannot describe the emotions they feel when their child is ill. This may be one of the most traumatic experiences of a parent's lifetime which also affects siblings, grandparents, other family members and friends.

Many people can help you cope with what is happening. Talking to the staff and or the social worker looking after your child is a good place to start.
