Newborn intensive care transport systems

Newborn intensive care transport systems

Newborn intensive care transport systems provide a mobile intensive care station for transporting critically-ill newborns and young infants.

The bespoke system design was launched in 2012 supporting NETS operations in Sydney, Canberra and Newcastle. An upgraded design is expected in 2025.

Modules that provide additional clinical capabilities, such as Inhaled Nitric Oxide, DC countershock, and phototherapy, can enhance these systems.

These were designed and constructed in-house by NETS’ clinicians and biomedical engineers, using a design supported by aerospace and software engineers.

The design was based on NETS’ clinical and operational experience overseeing thousands of emergency patient retrievals to support neonatal care without interruption during inter-hospital transport.

Neonatal transport system

The Neonatal Transport System engineering and certification meets strict aircraft and road safety requirements; providing care for the tiniest babies and infants up to about 6kg in weight across NSW, ACT and beyond.

These are one of a few integrated transport systems in the world, which have:

  • Standardised loading systems, interfaces and securing mechanisms across multiple modes of transport
  • Elimination of vertical lifting and simplification of manual handling
  • Non-invasive and invasive respiratory support
  • Multiple modes of ventilation
  • Multiple infusion pumps
  • Heated humidification of respiratory gases
  • Built-in medical gases and management systems with automatic changeover between system and vehicles
  • Power management and redundancy systems including operation on a range of DC and AC power supplies
  • System management and function display
  • Certified for carriage and use in a wide range of aircrafts
  • Modular approach for additional functions not routinely use.

Paediatric intensive care transport system

Paediatric Intensive Care Transport Systems provides mobile intensive care station for transporting critically-ill infants and children. They include bespoke components, which are integrated into the transport system.

The Paediatric Transport System engineering and certification meets strict aircraft and road safety requirements.

These are one of a few integrated transport systems in the world, which have:

  • Standardised loading systems, interfaces and securing mechanisms across multiple modes of transport
  • Elimination of vertical lifting and simplification of manual handling
  • Non-invasive and invasive respiratory support
  • Multiple modes of ventilation
  • Multiple infusion pumps
  • Heated humidification of respiratory gases
  • Built-in medical gases (air and oxygen) and management systems with automatic changeover between system and wall/vehicle
  • Power management and redundancy systems including operation on a range of DC and AC power supplies
  • System management and function display
  • Certified for carriage and use in a wide range of aircrafts
  • A modular approach for additional functions not routinely used
  • Add on module to allow ECMO capability.

NETS return transport system

The NETS Return Transport Systems provide a mobile care station for transporting newborns and young infants requiring level 2 and 3 care.

The systems have been designed and approved for use in NETS ground vehicles and ambulances.
